WeatherNet 6 Snowfall Reports
Thursday, October 27, 2011

A widespread early season snowfall developed through the afternoon and evening across all of eastern New York and western New England. On average 1/2" to 2" of snow accumulated in valley locations, generally under 500' in elevation with approximately 3"-5" falling at elevations of 1500' and higher with up to 7" reported at elevations of 2000' and higher.

A flat, and fairly fast moving low pressure wave riding from west to east along a stalled frontal boundary over Pennsylvania along with a fast moving moderately strong upper air trough combined to generate a light to at times moderate cold rain across the region from the pre-dawn hours on Thursday into the early afternoon. Rainfall amounts prior to any snow ranged from 0.40" to 0.70" on average.

A pool of colder than typical air for the time of the year sitting over southeast Canada in the days preceding this storm was tapped into as a low level northerly flow was induced by the low pressure system passing to the region's south. Temperatures dropped into and slowly through the 30s through the course of the day allowing snow to first mix with the rain during the morning in the highest elevations with snow working its way down to the valley floor by the early to mid afternoon. Much of the snow accumulation occurred in the period from 4pm through 8pm as snowfall rates briefly increased with the approach of the upper air trough. Dropping temperatures and sunset also aided in the accumulation process into the evening. Snow ended throughout the region between 9pm and 11pm.
