Severe Mohawk Valley Flash Flood Event
(Fort Plain)

Heavy rain between midnight and 8am, associated with a strong surface low passing from northwest Pennsylvania up through the Lake George Saratoga region, fell across especially the Mohawk valley resulting in severe flash flooding across southern Herkimer and western Montgomery counties. Widespread severe flooding was reported in the towns of Ilion, Mohawk, Herkimer, Fairfield, Little Falls, Middleville, Schuyler Corners in Herkimer County, Fort Plain, St. Johnsville, and Canajoharie in Montgomery counties. Significant flash flooding also occurred in Otsego and Warren counties during the event generally between 4:00am and 8:00am with the Warren County flash flooding occurring generally between 8am and 11am. States of Emergency were declared in several Herkimer county towns with I-90 closed for a time in Montgomery County between exits 29 and 29A due to flooding.

Moderate flooding occurred on the Mohawk River at Little Falls through 9pm on the 28th with major flooding along the West Canada Creek through Friday morning with the water receding below flood state Friday afternoon. Moderate flooding also occurred on the Canajoharie Creek between 8am and 2pm Friday with properties near the creek flooded.
