Severe T'Storm Outbreak - Pine Lake Campground Downburst (Fulton County)

A hot and oppressively humid air mass existed over the Northeast on Saturday August 13, 2016. Temperatures climbed into the low and mid 90s with an off the charts surge in dewpoints into the 75°-80° range as a diffuse warm front lifted into the region, forced north in response to a weak area of low pressure tracking over Lake Huron. The boundary, coupled with moderate instability (CAPE values up to 2500 j/kg) caused by the super heating of the atmosphere, along with veered flow to the WSW over the surface and up to 35 knots of mid level speed, supported clusters of multicell thunderstorms from the late morning and early afternoon through midnight which went on to produce pockets of wind damage across the region. In fact approximately twenty severe thunderstorm warning polygons were issued by the Albany National Weather Service with over seventy reports of wind damage coming in across eastern New York and western New England with the most intense activity roughly between 4pm and 10pm.

Intense frequent cloud to ground lightning also characterized the storms as they developed and moved across the region. Severe weather caused the cancellation of the races at Saratoga after the 5th race with the Fasig Tipton Yearling sales also cancelled after a tree came down on the Pavilion by a severe storm with fortunately no human or equine injuries reported.

Some of the most substantial wind damage reported in the region occurred due to a straight line downburst at the Pine Lake campground in Caroga Lake, Fulton County when numerous trees were blown down onto cars, tents, and campers. Minor injuries were reported with no fatalities.
