Storm damage on Delaware Avenue in Albany, Tuesday Afternoon August 7, 2018

Scattered severe thunderstorms erupted in a hot and very humid air mass over the Capital Region during the early afternoon on Tuesday August 7, 2018 producing frequent violent cloud to ground lightning, pockets of damaging wind, hail, and torrential rainfall across mainly Schenectady, southern Saratoga, Albany, southern Washington, Rensselaer, eastern Greene, Columbia and central and southern Berkshire counties between roughly 1:30pm and 6pm. Severe weather coverage was not widespread, though, as there were no strong upper air disturbances or surface boundaries to focus thunderstorms. Instead, a weak wind shift line and some subtle cooling aloft allowed a broken zone of thunderstorms to fire feeding off of low 70 degree dewpoint air and CAPE values from 2000 to 3000 j/kg. Modest bulk shear in the atmosphere allowed for some storm organization and brief supercell structures to develop in what were otherwise clusters of multi-cell storms. The most notable rotating storm was the first strong one to develop tracking from Glenville to Clifton Park between 1:30pm and 2:30pm before splitting into two cells with those cells weakening over southern Washington and northern Rensselaer Counties between 2:30 and 3pm. The rotation with this storm was in the mid and upper levels of it and was not that strong, but sufficient to maintain the updraft allowing it to produce hail up to ping pong balled sized (1.50" diameter) and pockets of damaging straight line wind gusts along its path.

The southern Saratoga County storm put out an outflow boundary which allowed additional thunderstorm development over southern Schenectady and northern Albany counties by 2:30pm with those storms consolidating into a severe multicell cluster over the cities of Albany and Troy by 3pm where they went on to produce violent cloud to ground lightning strikes, torrential rain, localized brief flash flooding, hail, and strong wind gusts in the city of Albany and points east into western Rensselaer County through East Greenbush before weakening by 3:30pm as it was moved into northern Berkshire County.

An additional cluster of severe thunderstorms, also characterized by frequent violent cloud to ground lightning, torrential rainfall, some hail, and pockets of damaging straight line wind gusts developed over eastern Greene County by 4:30pm and tracking through central and northern Columbia and central and southern Berkshire County through 6:00pm. There were multiple cells within the larger cluster which produced pockets of wind damage from just east of Catskills through Hudson, Chatham, Stuyvesant, Richmond, MA, Pittsfield, MA, Lenox MA, and Monterey, MA before moving out of the county by 6:30pm.
