The period from July 20 through July 29 featured three significant, but very localized, severe thunderstorm events that impacted Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties with storms producing considerable wind damage in and around Schenectady and Clifton Park multiple times. The storms resulted in long duration power outages and damage to homes and vehicles due to falling trees. I've combined all three events in this one file as each individually would not necessarily have warranted an inclusion in the Past Notable Storms area. However, the fact that all three events had such a significant impact in many of the same communities over such a short period of time is noteworthy.

Mohawk Valley to Schenectady, S. Saratoga and Rensselaer County Severe Event

An excessively hot and humid environment preceded the development of severe thunderstorms in the Mohawk valley to Schenectady, southern Saratoga, Rensselaer and Berkshire counties from the late afternoon through the early evening, with those storms weakening after 8-9pm. Damaging straight line wind, torrential rain, and frequent lightning accompanied the storms with numerous trees and power lines downed in the Mohawk valley to Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties resulting in power outages, some lasting well into Sunday July 21.

The high heat and humidity, characterized by afternoon temperatures into the mid 90s and dewpoints into the mid 70s, which resulted in CAPE (convective available potential energy) values up to 3500 j/kg (high instability,) was the chief driver of the thunderstorms with no sharp triggering mechanisms in the area and only weak winds aloft. High instability in an environment of weak wind shear is favorable for precipitation loading within any storms that can form, a recipe favoring wet microbursts, which in the end is what occurred with loosely organized multicell storms in the Mohawk valley where the axis is instability aloft was maximized.

The first storm developed over southern Herkimer County around 5:45pm and was quickly warned with this one isolated storm being the primary severe weather producer in Schenectady, southern Saratoga and Rensselaer counties between 7 and 9pm. Many trees and power lines were blown down from Scotia-Glenville to Niskayuna and Clifton Park as the storm rolled through.

That isolated storm was followed by a larger cluster which tracked down the Mohawk valley impacting Herkimer, southern Hamilton, Fulton, Montgomery, and Otsego counties and resulted in pockets of damaging wind in especially Herkimer and Montgomery counties. Weakening occurred as the storms entered the Capital Region, largely due to the atmosphere having already been worked over by the lead storm, thus greatly reducing the instability (thunderstorm fuel.)

The following series of radar images and National Weather service severe thunderstorm warning polygons chronicles the progress of the storms and the areas they affected.

Storm Reports

Hot humid weather and for the most part dry weather prevailed throughout the region on Sunday July 28, 2019. One isolated and spatially small thunderstorm, however, developed over western Schenectady County a little after 4:00pm and quickly became severe feeding off of high instability as it moved east through southern Saratoga, northern Rensselaer, southern Bennington, and northern Berkshire counties through 6pm. The storm produced microbursts along its path resulting in significant damage to trees and power lines throughout eastern Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties with some pockets of wind damage into northern Rensselaer County as well. Particularly hard hit were the towns of Schenectady, Niskayuna, Scotia, Alplaus, and Clifton Park where numerous trees were downed, some onto homes and vehicles, many onto power lines with widespread power outages reported. The following three radar/severe thunderstorm warning images illustrate the isolated nature of the storm and its path.

Storm Reports

Isolated severe thunderstorms developed during the mid to late afternoon over Dutchess and eastern Ulster counties where storms trained, moved over the same locations, for a couple of hours leading to torrential rain and urban and poor drainage flooding. Occasional microbursts produced damage to trees and power lines, especially around Millbrook.

A separate cluster of severe t'storms developed over Albany, Schenectady, and Saratoga counties during the evening feeding off of high instability, convective available potential energy (CAPE) values up to 3000 j/kg and up to 1000 j/kg of downdraft CAPE. The environment preceding the storms was hot and humid, with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s and dewpoints in the mid and upper 60s and characterized by very little wind shear both in speed and direction. There was a substantial area of dry air in the mid levels of the atmosphere, which was responsible for limiting thunderstorm development to across the region through the day, but also aided in strengthening the convective downdrafts in the thunderstorms that did form as evaporative cooling chilled the air aloft allowing for a greater downward acceleration. This process lead to microbursts from the severe multicell storms that did form.

Wind damage for the second consecutive day occurred in eastern Schenectady County in and around Schenectady and Niskayuna with pockets of wind damage extending into Saratoga County from Galway to Ballston Spa up to Saratoga Springs.

The storm in Albany County was producing wind damage in Rensselaerville at this time.
