Record Warmth
Saturday Into Sunday January 11-12, 2020

Record smashing warmth occurred from Saturday January 11 into the first half of Sunday January 12, 2020 as an anomalously warm air mass was drawn into the Northeast on a strong southerly flow in the warm sector of a large storm which tracked well west of the region through the Great Lakes. The air mass was characterized by generally cloudy skies and southerly flow in gusts from 25 to in some locations 45 mph.

Temperatures in the Capital Region and points south and east soared into the mid 60s Saturday and held there into Sunday morning before dropping Sunday afternoon in the wake of a morning cold frontal passage. (It's important to note that low level cold air did remain trapped in a few pockets in the Mohawk valley and Adirondacks where temperatures in a few places held in the upper 30s to low 40s. Glens Falls on Saturday topped out at 54°, which was a record for the 11th, but also a temperature far lower than the mid 60s in the Capital Region.)

What was most remarkable about the warming in the Capital Region is that is occurred without most of the normal tricks, typically necessary during the winter to get temperatures into the 60s and 70s. Those tricks would include some sunshine, strong downslope southwest flow off the Catskills with those elements often occurring immediately in advance of a cold front where compressional warming will come into play to push temperatures up a few extra degrees. None of that happened in this case indicating the warming was due to simply a brute force warm air mass for the time of the year, with a degree or two extra likely made more possible due to there being no snow on the ground. It's also remarkable that the temperature at Albany remained at or above 60° for 22 consecutive hours and that dewpoints climbed well into the 50s, both anomalies not seen to this extend in the recent past exceptional warm events.
